<h3>Finding Conferences</h3>

<h3>Finding Specific Abstracts</h3>
<p>An "abstract" is the short summary of longer content, such as an article or a presentation. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Cancer conference abstracts are formal presentation summaries in the proceedings of a conference. They are usually short, less than a page long. These abstracts may be the only report of particular research, and they may be used in a CV. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>However, conference abstracts are rarely indexed in online databases (Medline, Pubmed, or Ebsco), so they are harder to find than journal articles. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Some conference abstracts are published along with a journal, as a "supplement" issue; or, they may be published in a separate book of "proceedings," or direct to online. Some are only available to association members. The publication of the abstracts can be delayed some time after the event. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>Association websites</strong> - download directly to Refworks: </p>
<p>Some associations provide their abstracts in a "download" or "import" format directly from their websites. See the specific conferences in the left menu for more instructions. Some have limited search or download abilities. In many cases, the full abstract can be viewed, but the citation must be manually entered into RefWorks (e.g. using copy & paste). </p>

<p><strong><a href="http://ovidsp.ovid.com/">Embase</a></strong>: </p>
<p>Ovid's Embase database does include some indexed conference abstracts. In addition to your topic, title words, or author name, add the search: </p>
<p><strong>and (conference or abstract).pt.</strong></p>
<p>This will focus your search only on conference papers or abstracts. Using "pt" searches the field, "publication type."</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>Medline</strong> (Ovid, PubMed, Ebsco, or other website) generally does not index proceedings from conferences at the abstract level. "English Abstract" is used to tag a journal article which is not in English but has an English-language abstract (i.e. summary). It does not locate conference abstracts. The "Abstract" filter (limit) includes any article abstract; it does not focus on abstracts from conferences. "Clinical Conference" are journal articles reporting on rounds or professional discussions, not conference meeting abstracts. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong><a href="http://search.ebscohost.com/">CINAHL</a></strong> on Ebsco does not index specific abstracts (conference papers or presentations), although it has some indexing of the issues containing the abstracts. Look for the subject heading, "
Congresses and Conferences" and the publication type, "proceedings." You may be able to see a list of titles, but not the actual abstracts, and the citation may have to be added to RefWorks by hand.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong><a href="http://scholar.google.ca/">Google Scholar</a></strong> searches may find records for individual abstracts, which can be imported into Refworks (use the <a href="http://scholar.google.ca/scholar_settings?hl=en&as_sdt=0,5">Scholar Settings</a> tool to show the RefWorks link). Imported records usually need manual editing, e.g. to add the abstract number. Abstract records may list as "citation" without a link to the full text. Conference abstracts are not necessarily marked in any particular way, so they are very difficult to search in Google unless you know specific details (author, year, and title of the presentation).</p>

<p><strong>ProceedingsFirst / PapersFirst</strong>: UBC has access to these two databases, which list presentations from congresses, symposiums, conferences, expositions, workshops and meetings. The full text is not available in the database, only the citation. Library staff at VC can perform a search on request, to help locate or cite abstracts.</p>

<h3>Citing a Specific Abstract</h3>
<p> </p>
<p>Citing a conference abstract is similar to citing a journal article, with some key differences. Always check the "style guide" or manual for the bibliography style you are using. Different bibliographic formats (styles) require or omit some of this information:</p>
<ul>
<li>Conference title</li>
<li>Conference place and date</li>
<li>Editors of the published proceedings</li>
<li>Abstract number (not the same as page number)</li>
</ul>
<p>If the abstract is published as part of a journal, pay special attention to the issue number, which may have an S or the word supplement as part of it, and also the page numbering. Even if you are using RefWorks, it is a good idea to double check that all of the needed details are showing in your final result.</p>
